The Appalachian Homeless Mission (AHM) is a non-profit organization based in Lexington, Virginia. AHM was founded by Hugh Henderson, a Lexington resident who has served the poor in Peru, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and the Appalachians since the early 80s.
Hugh founded the Appalachian Homeless Mission in 2011 with this conviction: “I believe I have been called by God to serve, restore and enable the poorest of the poor as a full-time ministry, especially young homeless families and their children, cast off by society, without hope, without work and too often deprived of basic justice.”
Today, the Appalachian Homeless Mission consists of Hugh Henderson, President, two part-time staff members, and over 30 active volunteers, some of whom are currently or formerly homeless. The organizational and financial structure of the Mission, based on best practices, is as follows:
1. AHM is under the governance of the Board of Directors of Destiny Family Center (DFC), a 501(c)(3) in Stuarts Draft, Virginia
2. AHM reports every quarter to a special Oversight Committee appointed by the DFC Board, financially and in other strategic matters
3. Donations are received through the DFC bank account, and DFC has full oversight of all income, expenditures, and financial reports
