Hugh Henderson
For 37 years, Hugh has been called to serve the poor. He has done so during his business career in Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico, as well as at home in the Shenandoah Valley. Hugh started a food box program for poor families in Rockbridge County in 1987 with the support of the Ruritans. That program evolved into a full-bore ministry to Appalachian families and children.
In 2009, Hugh started visiting a local mission in Staunton, Virginia, where he befriended Numerous homeless families and started a program for “total restoration”. That program was the basis for the Appalachian Homeless Mission. As the President of AHM, Hugh is leading the effort to restore and enable homeless families and individuals to full health, employment, and spiritual well-being. Hugh lives in Lexington, where he runs the Appalachian Homeless Mission with the help of two part-time staff and 34 active volunteers in Rockbridge County and Augusta County.
